Student Opportunities

Ways to Join the IHP’s Work

The IHP seeks to actively engage students in our efforts to study, share, and reckon with the University of Michigan’s history and offers a range of opportunities to get involved, contribute, and shape the IHP’s work.

Students can enroll in IHP-affiliated courses across a range of departments and schools, apply for mini grants to fund research and engagement activities of their own design, join our dynamic IHP Student Advisory Committee, or work with the IHP as research assistants, interns, and more.

The IHP also offers a number of public programs throughout the year where students can learn more about our ongoing work.

IHP Research & Engagement Fund Mini Grants

Mini grants provide students, staff, and faculty with funding for research projects, creative endeavors, and engagement activities that develop and share deeper knowledge of U-M’s history through an inclusive lens. Through our mini grant program, the IHP has funded student films, senior thesis projects, histories of student organizations, public programs, a variety of research projects, and more.

Employment Opportunites

Undergraduate and graduate students contribute directly to the IHP’s efforts by working as research assistants, program assistants, interns, and more. From the archives to the IHP office to the recording studio, from Dearborn to Flint to Ann Arbor, from our annual Summit to programs throughout the year, students are an integral part of the IHP’s work.

IHP Courses

Courses associated with IHP project sites or supported by the IHP Teaching Fund focus on a range of topics from the university’s past, and offer students the opportunity to directly participate in the IHP’s mission to study and share a more inclusive history of U-M.

The IHP Student Advisory Committee leads and executes projects and provides feedback on the IHP’s historical research, engagement efforts, and plans for reparative actions.
