Researching Black U-M Alums

Did you know there is a database of rich information about U-M’s Black students from 1853 -1980? Researchers can use this database to address questions about culture, economics, society, genealogy, and more, uplifting the stories of Black alums. Attendees joined Beverly Willis, Ann Arbor Historian and Exhibits and Collections committee co-chair for the African American Cultural and Historical Museum of Washtenaw County, and Jean Winborn, President of Fred Hart Williams Genealogical Society and Trustee for the Ypsilanti District Library, for a talk about how the public can use this one-of-a-kind resource to answer their own research questions. Attendees also had hands-on help from Bentley archivists to assist with their searches and saw examples of important archival documents about the area’s Black communities in person.

This event is associated the African American Student Project, an IHP project site.
