Join us February 25-27, 2027, for Being Native on Campus: Place, People, and Institutional Histories. This national conference will examine the histories and contemporary experiences of Indigenous peoples in U.S. higher education while fostering dialogue about accountability, belonging, and building more just relationships.
Grounded in the history of the University of Michigan, the conference explores twentieth- and twenty-first-century Indigenous experiences in U.S. higher education through topics including contemporary resonances of Indigenous land dispossession, connections between educational environment and student success, changes in how the 1817 Treaty of Fort Meigs is understood and memorialized, the development of Indigenous community on university campuses, and the labor of making good relations.
Being Native on Campus will bring together members of Anishinaabe Tribal communities; U-M faculty, staff, alumni, and students; scholars; tribal college leaders; community activists; and the public for roundtable discussions, panels, and workshops to explore the complexity of institutional relationships with Indigenous people and continue building on the work of the 2026 Living With Treaties conference.
