Apply for the Inclusive History Project Student Advisory Committee

Inclusive History Project

Applications due March 8

The Inclusive History Project (IHP) is forming a student advisory committee to engage students interested in the IHP’s wide-ranging efforts to study and reckon with the University of Michigan’s (U-M) history and create a truly inclusive present and future. During the academic year, committee members will meet with IHP leadership to provide feedback on the project, including its historical research, engagement efforts, and plans for reparative actions. Committee members will attend IHP events and represent the project while building and maintaining connections between the IHP and student groups across our campuses. We invite any student interested in contributing to the IHP’s work to apply.

IHP Mission

The Inclusive History Project’s mission is to produce, study, and document a wide-ranging history of the University of Michigan’s three campuses and Michigan Medicine that is attentive to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The IHP engages our campuses and neighboring communities to better understand the full history of our institution, including its record of inclusion and exclusion, and to propose reparative actions that stem from our past.

Read the five-year plan for the project, A Design for the Inclusive History Project.

Composition

The student advisory committee will be composed of 12 undergraduate and graduate students with diverse backgrounds, identities, and perspectives:

  • 3 U-M undergraduate students from each campus: Flint, Dearborn, and Ann Arbor
  • 3 U-M graduate and professional students

Only students who plan to enroll for the 2024-2025 academic year are eligible to apply.

Commitment

Student advisory committee members are expected to attend 5–6 meetings per academic year. Members will meet on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. with the project’s co-chairs, the IHP managing director, and the IHP manager of engagement. Committee members generally serve 1-year renewable terms, although this year’s members will serve from April 2024 through the Winter 2025 term. Students will be paid a small stipend.

Meetings will rotate between virtual and in-person on the Flint, Dearborn, and Ann Arbor campuses. The IHP will make transportation arrangements for students traveling between campuses.

The first student advisory committee meeting will be in April 2024.

Benefits for Students

Student advisory committee members will play an important role in building a foundational, tri-campus DEI initiative focused on the history of U-M. In doing so, they will have the opportunity to interact with and learn from senior faculty and campus leaders, and build important skills for professional development.
