Attendees joined us for the premiere of Uncovering: History of the Black Student Union, a short documentary, directed and produced by Sydney McKinney-Williams, which explored the origins and evolution of the Black Student Union (BSU) at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. For decades, the BSU has been a vital student organization, fostering community, support, and advocacy for Black students on campus. However, little information about its founding was accessible in the university archives.

Determined to uncover this missing history, McKinney-Williams embarked on a research journey, meticulously examining historical documents and primary sources to piece together the BSU’s story. This documentary shed light on the organization’s early years, tracing its roots through the stories of faculty, staff, and students who played a crucial role in shaping it into the thriving, dynamic organization it is today.

Through in-depth interviews with alumni and students who were instrumental in the BSU’s formation and growth, Uncovering: History of the Black Student Union captured firsthand accounts of the challenges, triumphs, and lasting impact of the organization. The film highlighted the BSU’s critical role in student success—both academically and personally—while demonstrating how it has continuously adapted to serve and empower new generations.

The screening was followed by a panel discussion featuring individuals who appeared in the film, offering further insight into the BSU’s legacy and its ongoing impact on the UM-Dearborn community. The premiere powerfully explored history, resilience, and the enduring influence of student activism.

Uncovering: History of the Black Student Union was directed and produced by Sydney McKinney-Williams with the support of the Inclusive History Project.
